Other activities and events to help prepare older adults for exercise:

  • Use the Go4Life Speakers Toolkit to hold a Get Ready! Start Moving! Keep Going! Presentation. (Request the Toolkit at go4life@nia.nih.gov.)
  • Ask older adults at your facility to share their exercise success stories with a group of non-exercisers.
  • Show the Go4Life video, “Stay Independent with Regular Exercise.”
  • Invite a local health expert to talk about the benefits of exercise. Make available the free Go4Life materials you have ordered.
  • Look for and team up with another September health event in the community such as a health fair or health screening to plan a Go4Life event there.
  • At the end of the week, have a group discussion and ask older adults about their exercise experience and what they have done to prepare for exercise.

Week 2 (September 10-14) – Get moving! Do all 4 types of exercise

Use these Go4Life resources to help older adults get moving — or move more. Focus on all 4 types of exercise: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.

Other activities and events to help older adults move more:

  • Attend the Go4Life Facebook Live exercise event (date to be announced).
  • Print out color images of Go4Life exercises from the Try These Exercises page of the Go4Life website and make a Go4Life bulletin board highlighting one or more of the 4 exercise types.
  • Hold a Go4Life Walk in your facility, around the block, in a park, or at the mall.
  • Look for and team up with another September health event in the community such as a health fair or health screening to plan a Go4Life event there.
  • At the end of the week, have a group discussion and ask older adults about their exercise experiences and their plans for the following week.

Week 3 (September 17-21) – Stay on Track with Go4Life

Use these Go4Life resources to help older adults stay on track with the 4 types of exercise.

Other activities and events to help older adults stay on track with the four types of exercise:

  • Hold a “Subscribe to Go4Life” session with a group of older adults to help them sign up for Go4Life e-alerts and text messages about exercise. (Subscribe here.)
  • Exercising with a buddy often helps people stay on track. Ask people to buddy up with a friend for exercise and/or to bring a friend to class.
  • If not done previously, show the video, “Stay Independent with Regular Exercise.”
  • Look for and team up with another September health event in the community such as a health fair or health screening to plan a Go4Life event there.

Week 4 (September 24-28) – Go4Life throughout the year

  • Hold a Go4Life event (i.e., a luncheon, a gathering) where people can share their exercise experiences for the month and tell how they plan to continue after September.
  • Add the four types of exercise—endurance, strength, balance and flexibility — into your current exercise programs.
  • Rename a planned program as a Go4Life program.
  • Create Go4Life Walking Clubs or plan Go4Life walks once a month throughout the year.
  • Look for and team up with other health events in the community throughout the year such as a health fair or health screening to plan a Go4Life event there.
